Start by fluffing the branches for a full look, then layer your decorations: begin with lights, add garlands or ribbons, then hang baubles from largest to smallest. Finish with statement ornaments and a topper. For a cohesive style, use one main colour theme with a few accent shades for balance and depth. Take a look at our tree decorating guide for more tips and advice.

For a traditional green tree, red, gold and white create a classic festive look. A pre-lit tree pairs beautifully with metallic tones that reflect the lights, while a snowy or flocked tree suits pastel or silver decorations for a wintry, elegant effect.

They’re known as baubles, ornaments or trimmings. These can include hanging figures, glass shapes, ribbons, tinsel, and toppers, each designed to add texture and personality to your tree.

A general guide is:

  • 5ft tree: around 80–100 decorations
  • 6ft tree: around 100–120 decorations
  • 7ft tree: around 120–150 decorations

For small or tabletop trees, 20–40 pieces is usually enough. Adjust based on ornament size and how full you like your tree to look.

Pick a theme before you begin - for example, Scandi minimalism, rustic woodland, or glamorous metallics all work beautifully. Stick to two or three key colours and mix finishes like matte, shiny and glitter to create depth and visual balance.

Wrap delicate baubles in tissue paper or bubble wrap, and store them in sectioned boxes or sturdy containers. Keep them in a cool, dry place to prevent fading or breakage. Label each box by colour or theme for easy decorating next year.
