Raised garden beds are planting areas built above ground level, often using timber sleepers or frames. They improve drainage, allow better soil control and make gardening more accessible by reducing the need to bend or kneel.

Garden sleepers are solid timber beams used to create raised beds, borders and retaining edges. They’re valued for their strength, natural appearance and versatility in landscaping projects.

Start with a base layer of drainage material such as gravel or broken crocks if needed, followed by a mix of quality topsoil and compost. This creates a nutrient-rich growing environment for healthy plants.

Lining raised garden beds with landscape fabric or membrane helps improve drainage while preventing soil loss. It also adds a barrier between the soil and the timber to help prolong the life of the bed.

Protect beds by adding mesh or wire beneath the soil to deter burrowing animals, and use netting or cloches above ground to prevent pests from accessing plants.

In winter, clear spent plants, top up soil with compost and cover beds with mulch or fleece to protect the soil. This helps retain nutrients and prepares beds for planting in spring.
