Garden gravel and decorative stones or bark chippings offer a simple way to add texture, definition and contrast to outdoor spaces. Ideal for paths, borders and feature areas, they provide a low-maintenance finish that works beautifully alongside planting and hard landscaping.

Start by clearing the area and levelling the ground. For best results, lay a weed-suppressing membrane, then spread decorative bark or gravel evenly to the recommended depth, raking it smooth.

Gravel can be refreshed by raking to remove debris and lifting fallen leaves. For deeper cleaning, gravel can be washed with water and allowed to dry before being returned to the area.

This depends on the size of the area and the depth you want to achieve. As a general guide, most decorative gravel is laid at around 30–50mm deep, with coverage details provided on product packaging.

Decorative bark typically lasts between one and three years, depending on weather conditions and foot traffic. Over time it naturally breaks down, improving soil beneath it.

Decorative bark is usually applied at a depth of around 50–75mm. Measuring the area and checking coverage information will help you calculate the right amount for even results.

Birds are often attracted when bark is newly laid. Light watering can help settle it in place, and the activity usually reduces once the bark has settled and planting is established.
