Weeding

A wonderful way to prepare your garden for spring is to get rid of any weeds that you don’t want. This might be because they’re growing on your lawn or in between the cracks in your path. Although we’ll be removing the weeds, they won’t go to waste! Instead, we’ll learn how to use them to help other plants grow

Before you get started, you’ll need to gather the right tools:

  • Gloves
  • Hand fork
  • Bucket for weeds

Step 1: Identify your weeds

  • Discuss with an adult which weeds you want to remove and which you’d like to keep
  • Make sure only weeds are dug up, not garden flowers that have been sown or planted

Step 2: Get weeding

  • Using a hand fork, loosen the soil and remove weeds
  • Make sure you pull out the roots as well as shoots
  • Shake the soil gently off the roots, back into the beds

Step 1: Separate the weeds

  • Now it’s time to sort the ‘good’ weeds (annual weeds) that we can use in compost from the ‘bad’ weeds (perennial weeds)
  • Annual weeds have fine, hair-like roots.
  • Perennial weeds have large, thick roots
  • Sort the weeds into annuals and perennials. Annuals can go into the compost bin, and perennial weeds should be thrown away
