Mrs. Tiggy-winkle’s Recycled Hanging Basket

Mrs. Tiggy-winkle is always busy around the house with chores and washing. Here’s how you can create your own themed hanging basket by recycling in your kitchen

For this activity, you’ll need:

  • An old colander with handles (if you don’t have one at home, try a charity shop)
  • Twine, cord or rope
  • Plant membrane
  • Trailing herbs or flowers – we recommend fushias or lobelia for flowers and golden or lemon thyme for herbs
  • Potting compost
  • Trowel

Herbs are a great way to bring tasty plants inside and make them even easier to use in the kitchen. Or you could choose to fill yours with beautiful flowers

Step 1: Preparing your materials

  • Cut your plant membrane into a circular shape a bit bigger than the inside of the colander
  • Take your twine or rope and cut four lengths at 50cm each

Step 2: Making your hanging basket

  • Tie the ends of each piece of twine/rope to the handles of the colander, cut off any extra and move to one side
  • Place the plant membrane inside the colander

Step 3: Adding your plants

  • Carefully remove your plants from your pots and arrange them in the colander. Fill any gaps with compost
  • Tie your four pieces of twine/rope together above the colanderNow it’s time to find a sunny spot somewhere that everyone can enjoy looking at it!
