Watering jug

Make your own recycled watering jug

Did you know, it’s easy to create your own watering jug at home just by upcycling an old milk jug or juice bottle? Here, we’ll give you instructions for how to make your jug and personalise it with fun decorations.

Watering jug

For this activity you’ll need:

  •  An apron – our kids gardening apron is perfect for this activity

  • A clean, empty plastic container like a milk jug or juice bottle

  • A sharpie

  • Acrylic craft paint

  • A paint pallette

  • Paint brushes

  • Something to create small holes – like a corkscrew or thumb tack (ask a grown-up to help with this)

Step 1: draw your design

Remove the lid and use your sharpie to draw your design onto the bottle. You could draw flowers, leaves, bugs, birds, sunshine – let your imagination go wild. Allow the sharpie to dry.

Step 2: get painting

Now use your paint and paintbrush to colour in your design. Be sure to use all of your favourite colours. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 3: create watering holes

Next, ask your grown-up to help you make small holes in the bottle’s lid – this is how water will sprinkle out of your bottle.

Step 4: fill up

Once your paint is all dry, fill your bottle with water and add the lid, then simply find your nearest thirsty plant and get watering!
