You'll need:
A real Christmas tree (with decorations removed!)
Gardening gloves
A small saw
A small rake or trowel
Fallen leaves or twigs from your garden
A helping adult
Let's get started!
1. Pick a perfect spot
Choose a quiet corner of your garden where animals can explore without being disturbed.
2. Prepare your space
Clear away any toys, pots, or clutter so your wildlife friends have room to move in.
3. Get chopping (adult job!)
Ask an adult to carefully lop off some branches from one side of the tree using garden loppers or a saw. Always stand back while they do this!
4. Build your base
Lay the trimmed branches flat on the ground to make a base for your habitat.
5. Add the tree
Lay the rest of your tree on top of the branches so it forms a cosy pile.
6. Add finishing touches
Sprinkle fallen leaves or twigs over the top. This helps to trap warmth and makes the perfect hiding place for beetles, hedgehogs, and frogs.
No Garden? No Problem!
If you don’t have space for the whole tree, you can still turn your tree into a wildlife habitat:
1. Ask an adult to saw the trunk into small logs.
2. Stack the logs in a shady corner of your garden or on a balcony.
3. Pile some of the tree’s branches and fallen leaves on top.
Over the next few weeks, keep an eye on your habitat to see who moves in! Maybe you’ll spot a bird perched on top or a hedgehog snuggled under the branches.
