Sprouting peas growing experiment

Sprouting peas growing experiment

In this experiment, you can observe how pea (or bean) seeds grow. After just a few days, you’ll see your seed sprout to life!

You'll need:

  • An empty, clear jar or glass
  • Paper towels
  • A few peas or bean seeds (peas work particularly well!)
  • A spray bottle filled with water

Let's begin!

1. Line the jar

Fold a couple of paper towels and line the inside of your jar so the paper hugs the sides.

2. Add some middle cushion

Take more paper towels, crumple them up, and gently push them into the middle of the jar. You want the jar to feel full. This will help keep your seeds in place.

3. Position the seed

Carefully tuck a seed between the paper and the side of your glass jar. You can try adding a few seeds around the edge, so you have a couple to watch!

4. Add a mist of water

Spray some water into your jar until the paper towels are moist. They shouldn’t be dripping wet. Too much water will make the jar soggy.

5. Watch your seeds sprout

Put your jar somewhere bright, like a windowsill. Check it every day to see how your seed grows. Keep the paper moist by spraying it with a little water as needed.
