Pot your own colourful containers

Pot your own colourful containers

Brighten up your window sill or add pops of colour to your patio by potting your own colourful containers. Start by personalising your pots with paint, before planting your creations with the help of some handy garden tools.

Pot your own colourful containers

For this activity you’ll need:

  • An empty plant pot, or pots – choose ones that have drainage holes and saucers

  • Potting mix – we like to use peat-free compost like this one

  • An apron – our kids gardening apron is perfect for this activity

  • A trowel

  • A watering can

  • Acrylic craft paint

  • A paint pallette

  • Paint brushes

Pot your own colourful containers

Step 1: paint your plant pot

Use your acrylic paints to make fun designs on your pot – try stripes, spots, flowers, or even your name! Let it dry completely.

Step 2: fill with compost

Use your trowel to scoop compost into your painted pot until it’s almost full.

Step 3: plant your flowers or seeds

Make a little hole in the compost with your trowel, then pop in your flower or seeds. Use your trowel again to cover gently with compost.

Step 4: water your plants

Use your watering can to give your plant a drink – not too much! Just until the soil feels damp.

Step 5: find a sunny spot

Put your colourful pot somewhere it can get some sunshine, like a windowsill or outside on the patio.

We’d love to see your colourful containers!. Don’t forget to take photos and tag us using #DobbiesLittleSeedlings
