Compost heaps can be big or small, tidy or simple. You can:
- Use a purpose-built compost bin
- Reuse a large container, like a bucket or big tub (remember to make some holes in the bottom and sides to let your compost heap breathe!)
- Build your own bin from wooden pallets or recycled planks.
Whatever you choose, make sure your compost has a lid or cover. This keeps it cosy and stops wildlife or pets from sneaking in for a snack!
1. Start with a brown layer
Add a layer of dry, brown waste to the bottom of your bin, like leaves, twigs, or shredded paper. This helps air move around inside your heap. Then, pop a layer of soil on top.
2. Add a green layer
Next, add a layer of fresh, green waste. This includes apple cores, banana peels, plant trimmings, grass cuttings, and veggie scraps. Add another layer of soil on top.
3. Layer green and brown waste
Continue layering your brown and green waste items like a compost sandwich. Remember to add soil between each layer – this introduces important bacteria and fungi to kickstart decomposition!
Here’s a reminder of what counts as green and brown waste:
Team green
• Fruit and veggie scraps
• Coffee grounds
• Grass cuttings
• Plant trimmings
Team brown
• Dry leaves
• Twigs
• Shredded paper
• Cardboard pieces
• Straw or hay
4. Give it a mix and a drink
Use a small garden fork to help you mix the heap – you can ask an adult for help here. Then sprinkle some water over the top, but not too much. The compost should be damp like a wrung-out sponge.
5. Keep Feeding Your Compost
Every time you have new food scraps or garden waste, add them to your compost corner. Remember to give it a mix every few weeks.
No Garden? No Problem!
If you have a small garden or balcony, you can still make a brilliant mini compost heap:
1. Use a small/medium-sized bucket with holes in the bottom.
2. Add layers of soil and scraps (greens and browns).
3. Pop a lid on top.
4. Turn or shake it gently now and again to help decomposition.
