Pumpkin fun

If you planted pumpkins in May, they should be almost ready by now. You’re probably wondering what to do next. Here are a few ideas…

Carve it

Create a glowing Halloween pal to sit at your door. You could make it scary or friendly.

Just make sure you have an adult to help you as you’ll need something sharp to carve it.

Paint it

If you want your pumpkin to last longer, you can paint it instead.

You could turn it into a ghost or write a spooky message!

For something sweeter…

Cook it

If you’re thinking of making something tasty with pumpkin, it’s best to use tinned pumpkin.

The pumpkins we use for carving are not best for baking.

Pumpkin Flavoured Muffins

Celebrate pumpkin season with these tasty bakes!

For this recipe, you’ll need:

  • 225g plain flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 50g soft light brown sugar
  • 200g pumpkin puree (you can buy this in a can)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 125g salted butter, melted
  • White buttercream or icing
  • Pecans, or any toppings you'd like

Step 1: Prepare your tray

  • Fill your muffin tin with muffin cases, you should be able to make 12 muffins with this recipe
  • Heat your oven to 200c/180c fan/gas 6

Step 2: Mix your ingredients

  • Mix the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, caster sugar and light brown sugar together in a bowl
  • Whisk the puree and eggs together by hand and add the mix to your bowl, along with the melted butter
  • Mix everything with a whisk for 1-2 minutes

Step 3: Baking

  • Pour your mixture into the muffin cases
  • Bake in the oven for 15 minutes until they have risen and are a golden colour
  • You can tell if they’re ready if you push a skewer inside and it’s clean when you pull it out again
  • When ready, lift your muffins on to a wire rack to cool

Step 4: Decorating

  • You can eat your muffins as they are, or decide to decorate them
  • Prepare your buttercream or icing by following the instructions on the packet, and add to the top of each muffin
  • Add a pecan to top them off, or add any other decorations you want
