How to create an air plant wreath

How to create an air plant wreath

A wreath isn’t just for the festive season - it's a wonderful way to bring the outside in when the weather is cold, and we can’t spend as much time in our gardens as we’d like. It’s also an interactive and tactile way to display your plants and a great transition from your festive decor to your winter home.

This year, we’re sharing how to create a wreath from air plants – it’s simple to make, fun to decorate, and wonderfully low-maintenance.

How to create an air plant wreath

What you’ll need

Before you get started, you’ll need to have the following to hand:

  • Spanish moss

  • Garden wire or twine

  • Ribbon in your chosen colour

Steps to create your own air plant wreath

Step One
The first step in creating your air plant wreath is the base – use a plain wicker wreath (which you can find at Dobbies!) or use foraged twigs from your garden, secured with garden wire or twine.

Step Two
Next, add your moss layer. Create a full base for your wreath using Spanish moss, placing small handfuls on top of the wicker and securing it in place with your wire or twine, making sure there are gaps for the air plants to sit.

Step Three
Now it’s time to arrange your air plants. Begin positioning your air plants among the moss, tucking them in securely. Use different colours, textures, and sizes to add depth and interest.

Continue adding air plants until you’re happy with the overall design of your wreath. You can cover the entire wreath or keep the greenery to the lower half, leaving space above for stylish touches.

Step Four
Finish your wreath with a flair – use ribbon in your favourite colour to make a bow and hang your wreath on a doorway or mantle for an eye-catching display.

How to care for your wreath
Your air plant wreath will prefer a bright spot in indirect sunlight with good air circulation. To keep your wreath looking fresh and to ensure longevity, simply mist the air plants regularly to keep them fresh and update the wreath’s decorations seasonally to enjoy it year-round.
