How to create a gothic display using houseplants this Halloween

This Halloween, swap some of your usual seasonal decorations for Halloween houseplants! Add a little atmosphere to your home and create a display that can live long after spooky season has ended.

The key is choosing plants that suit your space, particularly as natural light levels drop during autumn and winter. We’ve put together some of our favourite houseplants to bring Halloween to life in your home, along with tips for creating your own gothic-inspired display.

The best houseplants for a gothic look

Monstera

With their large, distinctive leaves and dramatic silhouettes, Monsteras are ideal for creating a bold focal point. Their foliage looks particularly striking when illuminated from below, casting interesting shadows across the wall.

Try positioning a battery-operated light near the base of a large Monstera to highlight its leaves and create an eerie atmosphere for a Halloween dinner party.

Tip: Monsteras prefer bright, indirect light, so keep them near a suitable window rather than in a permanently dark corner.

Zamioculcas (ZZ plant)

With glossy, deep green foliage and strong, upright stems, the ZZ plant is a natural fit for the gothic trend.

Its architectural shape adds height to a display, while its ability to tolerate lower light levels makes it a useful choice as the days get shorter.

Tip: Allow the compost to dry between waterings, as this plant prefers conditions on the drier side.

Tillandsia (air plants)

Air plants are ideal for adding texture without taking up much space.

Their unusual shapes work well scattered along a dining table, tucked between natural materials, or displayed in hanging glass baubles.

Tip: They don’t need compost to grow, although they do need suitable light, good air circulation, and regular watering according to their care requirements.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera brings sculptural, spiky leaves to a Halloween display, adding contrast to softer foliage and moss.

It’s also relatively easy to care for, provided it receives plenty of bright light and is not overwatered.

Tip: Although it adds the right look, it’s better suited to a bright windowsill than a dim corner.

Cyclamen

For a different take on gothic greenery, cyclamen introduces colour and delicate, patterned foliage. Look for varieties with deeper-toned flowers to complement a darker display.

Tip: Cyclamen can flower through the cooler months when given the right conditions, but indoor plants generally prefer a cool spot away from direct heat.

Maranta Leuconeura (prayer plant)

For something a little more unusual, consider a prayer plant. Its leaves rise and fold in response to changing light, often becoming more upright in the evening.

This natural movement brings an animated quality to your display, making it a fitting addition to a Halloween-inspired arrangement.

Tip: Prayer plants prefer bright, indirect light and higher humidity, so avoid placing them somewhere too cold or dry.

How to create a gothic Halloween tablescape

By combining houseplants with natural textures, seasonal fruit, and atmospheric lighting, you can create a display that feels dramatic, unusual, and full of character.

1. Start with a natural centrepiece
Begin with a large piece of tree trunk or a substantial section of natural wood to form the base of your display. This creates a focal point and gives you somewhere to position smaller plants and decorative elements.

2. Layer in moss and air plants
Drape Spanish moss across the wood, then tuck air plants into the gaps to introduce different shapes and textures. Scatter a little additional moss across the table to soften the edges of the arrangement and bring the individual elements together.

3. Add height with statement houseplants
Position larger plants behind your central arrangement to build height and create depth. A selection of large Monsteras, dark green ZZ plants, and sculptural Aloe vera will give the display plenty of contrast.

Think about the shape of each plant as you position it. Broad Monstera leaves create a dramatic backdrop, while upright ZZ plant stems and pointed Aloe Vera leaves introduce sharper lines.

4. Bring in seasonal details
Finish the tablescape with pumpkins, figs, and pomegranates for a rich, Victorian-inspired feel. Their shapes and colours complement the foliage, adding natural detail without taking attention away from the plants.

Battery-operated candles are a practical finishing touch, providing a warm glow as the evenings get darker. If you’re using lighting to highlight your plants, position it carefully to emphasise interesting leaves and cast dramatic shadows.

5. Look up for an extra dimension
To take your display further, use an extendable table display pole to introduce height above the table. Trail Spanish moss from the pole and hang glass baubles filled with air plants to create a delicate, web-like effect.

This draws the eye upwards and gives the whole arrangement a more immersive feel. Just make sure hanging decorations are securely attached and positioned safely above diners.
