How to create a Christmas card garland

One of our favourite things about the festive season is receiving a thoughtful, hand-written Christmas card. It’s a way to show you’re thinking of someone special, and a time-honoured way to share warm messages with friends and family over the holidays.

To create a Christmas card display that’s truly spectacular, you can turn your treasured messages into a garland to drape on your mantel or across a door frame as part of your festive décor.

What you’ll need

Before you get started, you’ll need to have the following to hand:

  • String lights – you can choose battery operated or plug-in

  • Mini wooden pegs or paperclips (you can pick these up at a local craft or stationary store)

  • Christmas cards from your favourite people

Steps to create a Christmas card garland

Step one:

The first step in creating your Christmas card garland is to choose your base. We recommend starting with a plain garland which you can shape and drape across a mantle, doorway, or window frame. For even more of a festive feel, choose a frosted or berry-covered garland.

Step two:

Next come the lights. Weave string lights through the garland, tucking them in amongst the foliage. This will add a cosy, festive twinkle and add depth to your display. You could even match your lights to your Christmas tree with cool, warm, and multi-coloured options!

Step three:

As cards arrive throughout December, attach them to the garland using mini pegs or decorative paperclips - just make sure you space them out evenly along the length of the garland for a full, balanced look.

If you need more cards to clip to your garland, you can use cards from Christmases past, postcards, or buy a pack of cards and display along the foliage!

Step four:

Personalise your garland to your style or to match your festive décor with finishing touches such as baubles, sprigs of holly from the garden, or ribbons for extra sparkle and flair. Have fun choosing decorations that complement your cards and overall theme.

Now it’s time to admire your creation! Making your own additions to your festive décor is rewarding, and you can re-use your garland year after year, letting it grow with each card you receive. Once finished, you’ll have a heartwarming feature in your home that celebrates the joy of the season.
