Grow delicious microgreens on your windowsill

Red cabbage microgreens are easy to grow, ready to harvest in 8-10 days, and are a tasty addition to many meals, making them the perfect choice for young, first-time growers

For this activity, you’ll need:

  • 33g red cabbage seeds
  • 3 growing trays>Soil or compost
  • Misting spray water bottle
  • Scissors
  • A hardback book

Step 1: Prepare your growing trays

  • Place a growing tray with holes inside a growing tray without holes
  • Fill the upper growing tray with about 3cm of compost, smooth gently with your hands, and mist well with your spray bottle

Step 2: Plant your seeds

  • Sprinkle the red cabbage seeds evenly on top of the moist compost. Gently press the seeds in with the palm of your hand

Step 3: Water and cover

  • Water the tray one more time and place another tray on top. Place the book on top of this tray to add some weight for the seeds to take root. Leave for 3 days

Step 4: Water and cover (again)

  • Remove the upper tray with the book in it. Use your water bottle to spray the seedlings
  • Place the tray with the book back on top and leave for another 3 days

Step 5: Add sunlight and water

  • Add a shallow layer of water to the base tray (the tray below with no holes)
  • Uncover the plants, set them on a sunny windowsill, and leave for 2-3 more days

Step 6: Harvest time!

  • When your microgreens are about 10-15cm tall with green leaves and purple stems, harvest them with scissors
  • Use a colander to rinse the plants gently and then air dry on paper towels
