White Cedar

Radiant bronze tinted, amber foliage makes this striking conifer stand out in any landscape.

Thuja 'Rheingold' is a slow growing bushy conifer, forming a large rounded shrub that sits comfortably in most sized gardens and growing to a mature height of approx. 1.5m means it is easy to keep within an allocated space. Coming into its own in the winter, the golden amber colour becomes deeper, making Thuja 'Rheingold' stands glisten when there is little else of interest. Its foliage is held on flat fan shaped sprays, almost scale-like on closer inspection, with attractive orange tinted tips when young and maturing to golden yellow in summer. The best colours develop when it is planted in full sun.

One of the most popular selections of Thuja occidentalis this variety was first identified in 1900 and continues to be sought after today.

Plant Care & Advice

Thuja 'Rheingold' is best grown in full sun which will lead to the best colours for the foliage. Grow in sheltered sites in a South, West or East facing aspect to ensure good light levels. Some exposure is possible but Thuja 'Rheingold' needs to be sheltered from drying winds when it is young. This conifer prefers a moist but well drained soil and is tolerant of most soil types needing little watering or feeding except in the first year to help with establishment.

Pruning is not required but can be trimmed occasionally to shape and to promote new growth.  Best planted in spring or autumn and when grown in a pot a soil based compost should be used and it should be watered and fed regularly.
