Sustainability Policy

Green fingers and green values

Dobbies is the UK’s leading garden centre. This extends beyond providing the best garden products, service and advice. We make it our priority to be responsible and care for our environment.

As a business, we know we must raise awareness and promote better sustainability among our customers, employees, regulators, investors, suppliers and the community.

Terra Carta

We are proud supporters of #TerraCarta from HRH Prince of Wales’ Sustainable Markets Initiative. The Terra Carta provides a road map to 2030 for businesses to move towards an ambitious and sustainable future.

We keep you informed

We have a number of targets for 2021:

  • Dobbies is committed to communicating the importance of soil health, environmentally-friendly practices and sustainable solutions
  • Our aim is to be 90% peat-free during 2021
  • We do not sell chemical products for pest control
  • We offer our customers recycling opportunities

We inspire

We work with our supply chain to reduce environmental impact and improve ethical behaviours. We make it our responsibility to assess our suppliers and make sure they’re introducing best practices. And if they’re not as green as they could be, we work with them to ensure they are.

We respect nature

Nature plays a very important part in our business. We want Dobbies to have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the UK. This means keeping our daily energy use to a minimum by lowering our energy requirements and, where possible, generating our own renewable energy.

We’re not content with merely complying with regulations. We have an environmental management system that gives stores an individual target for reducing their energy and water use.

Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Legislation

Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Legislation Following the introduction of WEEE legislation, old electrical items must not be disposed of with standard waste but should be taken to a central collection point for recycling.

All new products now carry a symbol of a crossed out wheelie bin. Click here to view.

This is to remind our customers that the product should be disposed of carefully and not thrown out with general household waste.

For more information please read our WEEE policy here.
