Black Cherry Plum
Deep purple leaves and black stems are a beautiful feature and a contrast to the pale pink flowers in early spring.
Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra' really does have it all! Small enough to grow in most gardens with a neat rounded shape, the twigs in spring are crowded with masses of pale pink flowers that have fluffy centres loved by bees and other insects that are foraging on warmer days. Fresh new leaves appear bright reddish-purple and mature to deep purple, making a lovely contrast to the flowers in March and April. Through summer, the tree is a welcome change from the usual green leaf shades and makes a good climbing frame for summer flowering clematis or rambling roses whose flowers will contrast beautifully with the deep purple leaves. Its beauty and ability to tolerate a wide range of soils makes this a popular tree of choice for use in street and park planting schemes.
This small to medium sized tree is versatile and easy to grow, with magnificent foliage colour and beautiful blossom.

Plant Care & Advice

Choose a sunny or partly shaded position in soil that doesn't get too dry in summer or waterlogged through the winter months. When planting, dig a hole that's twice the size of the original container and add a handful of suitable fertiliser to the soil that will be used to refill the hole around the plants roots. Firm the soil around your tree and water well before e and after planting. A handful of general fertiliser can be sprinkled around the base of the tree each spring and a layer of well rotted manure or garden compost can be added to top up the soil. Your tree should not need much pruning but remove any straggly shoots in late summer or large branches in winter.
