Gooseberry Careless

Ribes uva-crispa Careless

Fast growing with heavy crops

A popular and reliable variety with large, delicious green berries that are ready to pick by midsummer. The berries are smooth and crisp.

Happy in sun or part shade in a sheltered spot.

Good in any well drained soil. Keep well watered through the summer. Cut back in winter to create a balanced bush - choose five main stems and cut back to 15cm, remove the other stems, cutting back to the base. At the same time mulch with garden compost or well rotted manure.

One of the most popular varieties, it has been around since 1855. Its berries are great fresh or cooked.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
