Fig Brown Turkey

Ficus carica Brown Turkey

Exotic fruit from this fully hardy plant

This is the best fig variety for the UK climate, and it will eventually make a small tree, with attractive glossy leaves. Green figs are produced that ripen into sweet purplish figs by late summer in a good year.

Happiest in a sunny, sheltered position where the sun will ripen the fruits. Perfect for training against a south or west facing wall, or growing in a container on a sunny patio.

Good in any well drained soil. To ensure a good crop, the roots must be restricted, if planting in the ground line the planting hole with paving slabs.

Figs have been cultivated since Roman time, they can be eaten fresh, used in desserts, or preserved as dried fruit.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
