Vinca major Variegata

Greater Periwinkle

White and green variegated leaves and deep blue flowers

This Periwinkle has leaves with yellow or golden edging framing a green centre. It blooms in Spring, producing familiar five pointed violet-blue flowers.

They like shady spots best, though they will perform in any location.

Less vigorous than other type of Periwinkle, it may need extra cultivation in its first year but once established they can be cut back harshly to prevent creepage.

As the blooms progress, they gradually fade to white in the centre.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.

Planting site Banks and slopes, Coastal or drought resistant
