Spiraea japonica Magic Carpet

Low growing form with young red foliage turning yellow over time

Magic Carpet is a low-growing shrub with lime green foliage developing from bright pink buds. In the Summer months it develops clusters of bright pink blossoms that fade and regenerate to provide a continuous show.

It needs full sun to be at its best, so don't crowd with other plants. It will spread right to the ground, making a striking statement at the front of a border or in a container.

Plant in moist free-draining soil. It will thrive on its own. Its discrete low growing habit needs pruning immediately after flowering annually to encourage new growth and maximise flowering. If overgrown it can be pruned back hard immediately after flowering.

Magic Carpet has received awards internationally including the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
