Spiraea japonica Double Play Artist Galen

PollinatorAward

Deep purple young shoots and bright pink flowers

As the name suggests, Double Play Artist performs a dual colour change with foliage emerging purple red in the spring before turning blue-green, and then again in the autumn months turning yellow orange and red.

Where?

It needs full sun to be at its best, so avoid crowding with other plants. They spread right to the ground, making a striking statement in a container.

How?

They will thrive on their own in moist free-draining soil. When pruning, wait until late winter or early spring when the harshest frosts have passed and reduce the shrub by about a third annually to encourage new growth.

This plant is attractive to the eye and also attractive to butterflies.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
