Deep purple flowers and golden edged leaves

The handsome, evergreen leaves which have a glittering golden edge are reason enough to choose this plant but this Skimmia has two other tricks up its sleeve. It produces its flower buds in autumn when they sit amongst the leaves as white clusters. Through the winter months they mature to deep pink and open to thick white spikes of starry flowers in spring, wafting their scent around the garden.

Where?

Plant in a sunny or part shaded, open site in all but shallow chalk soils. Also happy in a large container.

How?

Keep well watered until established. Use ericaceous compost if growing in a container.

This is a male variety that produces masses of flowers in spring but no berries in autumn

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
