Magnify glass

Salix alba Chermesina

Dramatic winter interest

Brightly yellow coloured stems in winter make this a beautiful plant for the edge of a pond where the russet colours will be reflected in the water on sunny winter days. Easy to grow in most situations either as a tree or kept pruned as a shrub.

Where?

Happy in sun or a partly shaded site and soil which is not too dry. A great plant to grow in waterlogged soil where many plants will not thrive.

How?

Cut back the stems to a few centimetres from the ground in late winter every two years to maintain the best bark colour or grow as a tree for it's elegant shape.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
