Rhus typhina Tiger Eyes Bailtiger

Stag's Horn Sumach

Dwarf form producing shocking red foliage in autumn

The fern like leaves appear in spring as a soft red haze, ageing to lime green and then golden yellow through the summer months. Velvety acid yellow flowers are borne in upright, knobbly clusters in summer and are followed by red fruits. In autumn the leaves turn fiery red and orange before falling to leave the velvet covered branches for winter interest.

Happy in sun or part shade and moist but well drained soil.

Give this plant lots of room as it likes to spread its wings. Water frequently in dry weather.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
