Rhus typhina Laciniata

Stag's Horn Sumach

Less invasive variety with typical blazing autumn foliage

Luxuriant fern like leaves that are finely cut form a canopy from late spring until autumn. They emerge pale green and colour spectacularly in autumn to golden yellow and orange before falling. This large shrub looks great in an island bed or as a back drop to a cool, partly shaded border.

Where?

Happiest in sun or part shade and moist but well drained soil, allow plenty of space for it to spread its branches.

How?

Water regularly in dry weather and remove any suckers (new shoots growing from ground level) as they emerge in spring to keep the plant in check.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
