Rhododendron Red Dawn

Bright flowers contrasted by dark green foliage

A compact evergreen rhododendron with dark green leaves, silver on the undersides. It grows to form a domed shrub. In spring red buds open to deep pink flowers, lighter in the throat and spotted with red. Free flowering from an early age, reliable and an excellent choice for a small garden.

Plant in sun or shade in beds and borders or grow it in a large pot. Perfect under the shade of deciduous trees with ferns and hostas.

Well drained but most neutral to acid soil. If growing in a pot use ericaceous, lime free growing medium. Water regularly in dry spells. Remove flower heads when blooms have faded.

Rhododendron yakushimanum is a native of Japan. The new growth usually emerges covered in a silver grey - this is natural and disappears as the leaves mature.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
