Rhododendron Georg Arends

Japanese azalea

Masses of stunning red flowers in spring

A spectacular evergreen shrub that produces masses of large bright red flowers in mid May, up to 7.5cm in diameter, on a round shaped and bushy plant with dark green foliage. Very easy to grow (in the correct acid conditions) and very tolerant of cold winter weather. Will grow to about 75-100cm in 10 years.

Ideal for containers and small gardens, including rock gardens and front of borders where acid soil conditions exist.

Needs acid (ericaceous) soil conditions to thrive. If garden soil dos not suit can easily be grown in a container using ericaceous compost.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. If planting in a bed or border test the soil to establish its pH. If the soil is too alkali it is best to grow your plant in a container. In either case prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig ericaceous compost into the base of the hole, if planting in a container use ericaceous compost to fill the pot. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
