Phormium Evening Glow

New Zealand Flax

Arching wine-red leaves with bronze edges

Evening Glow is a soft crimson variety of New Zealand Flax that delivers spikes of tubular flowers in the Summer heat. It grows to around three feet in height and gradual clumping may create around a similar spread.

Where?

Place in full sunlight or partial shade making sure the soil is moist and well-drained.

How?

Plant in the garden - a rockery works well to provide colour contrast - or place in a container.

Cut back any dead or dying leaves in Autumn. In areas that receive hard frosts, containers should be taken indoors or placed under glass.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
