A compact evergreen shrub with handsome leaves that emerge bright-red in spring before ageing to a darker green. Attractive clusters of white flowers appear during the summer. In the autumn the leaves develop colourful tones.

Where?

Place it in full sun or partial shade, where it can add a colourful sight to a shrub border or it can be planted in a container.

How?

It is best planted any moist, well-drained soil and may need frost protection in exposed cold locations.

Nandinas are not bamboos but are in the same family as Berberis and originate in eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
