Magnolia Susan, 3l

Masses of beautiful flowers in early spring

A bushy magnolia with upward sweeping branches. The slender tulip blooms are bright red-purple, purple-pink on the inside of the petals; softly shining, fragrant and very elegant. They are carried like candles in mid spring before the leaves unfurl and open in succession giving a long flowering period. Striking underplanted with blue brunnera or pulmonarias.

Where?

Plant in full sun or semi-shade in beds and borders or grow as a specimen.

How?

Thrives on most well-drained fertile soils, especially clay. Avoid pruning if possible.

The slender blooms of this magnolia are less easily damaged by frost than the flowers of many varieties.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
