Leucothoe axillaris Curly Red

Dog Hobble

Unusual evergreen ground cover

This colourful evergreen shrub is principally used for its excellent ground cover capabilities and its sturdy nature. The leaves emerge red in spring, turn a soft green during the summer and then return to their striking red for the winter.

It likes a shady moist spot in the garden. Use it to cover slopes and banks, or as an interesting winter container.

Plant in acid soils, that are moist and well-drained. Water well until established.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
