Magnify glass

Hydrangea macrophylla Salsa

Large pale pink flowers with crimson edges

With double flowers that are mop headed, this deciduous shrub forms large clusters that look elegant in summer. The flowers range from shades of coral pink with red edges to blue-violet (depending on the pH of the soil they are grown in) and the large-sized leaves are glossy green.

Where?

Well-drained soil that is rich in moisture and humus will ensure top performance. Best positioned in partial shade.

How?

If growing in a container premium multi purpose compost is best. You can encourage the plant to produce pink flowers by adding lime or blue flowers by adding aluminium sulphate.

“Romance” has its origins in China and Japan. Its leaves are used in the making of the popular Japanese beverage, Amacha.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
