Hydrangea macrophylla Romance

Delicate flat pink mophead flowers

This deciduous shrub has flattish, dreamy pink flowers that start blooming in early summer. The flowers are double and the leaves are large, with a greyish-green shade. A fantastic specimen plant.

Where?

The plant grows best in well drained soil with good moisture content. Give this shrub partial to full shade for its unhindered growth.

How?

Premium compost should be added aplenty to the soil. The flowers acquire a pinker shade when lime is mixed with the soil and a lavender shade when aluminium sulphate is added. It should be pruned back by approximately one third annually after flowering.

This plant has its origin in Southeast Asia.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
