Hydrangea macrophylla Pia

GardenAward

Large globe like flowers on this compact variety

This is a compact variety but gives all the flower power of its bigger cousins and fits comfortably into smaller spaces. The globe-shaped flower-heads are made up of vivid carmine red flowers with white centres, and look gorgeous against the dark green leaves.

Where?

Happy in a sunny or partly shaded position. Ideal for a cottage garden, in a border or container. It also makes a great cut flower.

How?

Loves growing in a fertile, well-drained, soil. Keep well watered in dry spells. Use a good quality potting compost for container growing.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
