Spanish Gorse

Compact plant giving a shock of yellow flowers in spring

A popular variety of Genista, this dense dwarf shrub has small leaves and bright yellow, pea shaped flowers that envelop it in May and June.

Where?

Demanding a position in the sun its trailing, arching nature mean it’s excellent for covering walls or as part of a rockery.

How?

Plant in a large, deep hole in poor to moderately fertile soils; don’t water too regularly once established as the roots naturally look for moisture.

Originating on the hillsides of France and Spain this shrub thrives in similar conditions and is generally disease free.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
