Gaultheria procumbens Winter Pearls

Checkerberry

Bold and beautiful ground cover with dazzling winter berries

A hard working evergreen shrub, ideal for small spaces and patio containers. Winter hardy foliage offers year-round shape and structure. In spring it is adorned with hanging bell-shaped blooms in a delicate shade of white-pink. The resulting pearlescent  pink berries last right though autumn and into winter, making ‘Winter Pearls’ a stand out selection within the genus. This easy to grow shrub has many uses in borders and containers and makes a particularly attractive path edging.

Where?

Happy in a shady border or in a large container on the patio.

How?

Happiest in well-drained acidic soils in full sun or partial shade, gaultheria are easy to look after, requiring little to no pruning. Use a good quality ericaceous compost for containers and water regularly during the growing season.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. If planting in a bed or border test the soil to establish its pH. If the soil is too alkali it is best to grow your plant in a container. In either case prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig ericaceous compost into the base of the hole, if planting in a container use ericaceous compost to fill the pot. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
