Elaeagnus x ebbingei Gilt Edge

PollinatorAward

Evergreen foliage in green and yellow

This is an evergreen shrub that has leaves which have contrasting dark green centres and gold-coloured margins. New leaves have a coating that resembles silvery scales which are thick below the mature leaves, but dots on the upper leaf surfaces. Silver-scaly flowers are concealed in its branches in October. The presence of the flowers is made known by the fragrance that floats through the air, especially in Autumn. It also produces red autumn fruit.

Where?

Gilt Edge is drought resistant and useful for hedges or screens.

How?

It needs chalky, sandy, and loamy soil, or clay.

This plant looks great when planted with Japanese barberry, heavenly bamboo, and purple smokebush.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
