Broom

Bright yellow flowers in spring and early summer

Bright golden yellow flowers explode on the arching, wiry stems of this plant in early summer. The whole shrub is smothered in the blooms - a beautiful sight in a sunny border or when grown on a dry bank. A favourite with bees.

Where?

Happiest in full sun and suitable for exposed, coastal sites.

How?

Best in a well drained soil, brooms are very drought tolerant once established. After flowering cut back the stems by two thirds to encourage the new shoots needed for next year's flowers.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
