Corylus avellana Red Majestic

GardenAward

Twisted Hazel

Unusual contorted stems with decorative purple foliage

An easy to grow shrub for all year round interest in your garden. Makes a beautiful sculpture of twisted winter twigs that look amazing when covered with heavy frost or a light dusting of snow. Deep-red spiky leaf clusters lengthen with the days and unfold to show deep wine-red colour. When fully open, the heart-shaped leaves change colour to greenish-red.

Where?

A stunning, large shrub or small tree which is equally happy in a large container on the patio or in most soils and spots in the garden.

How?

Choose a sunny or partly-shaded spot in a border or plant as a feature in a lawn. Slow growing so you need only trim to keep tidy in spring. Use a loam based compost for growing in a container.

Corylus avellana 'Red Majestic' was developed in Germany by Rolf de Vries in 2004.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
