Coronilla valentina subsp. glauca Citrina

Bastard Senna

Scented yellow flowers in late winter/early spring

A delicate beauty which can be grown a large container in a sun room or on a sheltered patio where the deliciously scented flowers can be enjoyed. Lacy blue-green leaves are an evergreen feature in their own right and the bright golden-yellow clusters of flowers have a zingy, citrus scent. They grow over a long season from late winter until late spring with a few more flowers in summer.

As well as growing in a container in full sun, Coronilla is also happy growing against a warm, sunny wall or in a sheltered border in well-drained soil where it makes an elegant shrub.

Choose a very sheltered site to grow this plant outside or place in a large container using loam-based compost. Protect from cold winter weather by moving the plant under cover or wrapping with horticultural fleece.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
