Cordyline australis Variegata

Cabbage Palm

Stunning light green and white striped foliage

The handsome leaves on this Cabbage Palm are fresh-green with a wide creamy-white edge - a perfect frame for the big clusters of scented, ivory-white flowers that appear on established plants in summer. In mild places this tropical looking plant will grow into a small tree, forming a trunk as the lower leaves fall to make way for new growth at the top.

Grow it in a big container in colder locations so that it can be protected in the winter or plant it in a sunny or part-shaded well-drained border where it will be perfectly at home in milder areas.

Choose a sheltered, sunny site away from cold winds or use a loam-based compost for container growing. Raise the container on 'pot feet' in the winter to help drainage.

Cordyline australis Variegata needs protection against frost and severe weather in winter.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
