Cabbage Palm

Stunning sword shaped leaves striped green and white

The colour of the leaves of this Cabbage Palm will stop you in your tracks and it makes an ideal partner for a favourite container in a sunny or partly-shaded spot. The leaves of this plant literally do dazzle with their bold two tones of smoky-green and creamy-white. This tough palm will grow into a small tree in mild areas of the country. It's ideal for adding a tropical look to your garden or patio. Older plants produce branches of sweet-smelling, ivory-white flowers in summer which bees love.

Where?

Choose a sunny well-drained spot away from cold winter winds or grow in a large container using a good quality loam-based compost.

How?

Protect the plants through hard weather by wrapping them in horticultural fleece or moving container-grown plants under cover or to a sheltered part of the garden. Remove dead leaves from the base of the plant as necessary.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
