California Lilac

Evergreen shrub with deep blue flowers

Medium sized and evergreen, this variety of Californian Lilac has exceptionally deep blue flowers which cover the plant in clusters in April and June.

Where?

Enjoys a sunny and sheltered spot, ideally with a south or west aspect, either in a border or against a wall.

How?

It will grow well in fertile, well drained soils and is hardy but needs to protecting from cold, drying winds. After it flowers it will benefit from a mulch and a light pruning.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
