Ceanothus Burkwoodii

GardenAward

Californian Lilac

Stunning blue flowers and compact form

A fine evergreen shrub for the back of a sheltered, sunny border where the plant will quickly make a column of glossy, deep green leaves. Fluffy clusters of rich blue flowers smother established plants from late summer until autumn - a vision in blue that is a favourite with bees.

Where?

Happiest in well drained soil and drought tolerant once established, Ceanothus do not like cold winds so choose a sheltered position.

How?

Water your plant regularly during prolonged dry weather until it has established. Cut back lightly to shape after flowering.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
