Magnify glass

Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) 5 x 60/90cm Bare root Hedging

Native species, similar to green Beech but with saw-edged leaves. Green catkins from late spring, turning to clusters of hop-like fruit in autumn. Hardy hedging which is both shade and frost tolerant. Use an an alternative to Beech on wet heavy soils, planted on its own or as part of a native mixed planting. Depending on density of hedging required, suggested planting 5 to 7 plants per metre run, in staggered rows.

Good soil preparation is key to giving your new hedge the best possible start. Thoroughly prepare the ground, digging the soil to a spades depth, adding plenty of organic matter as you go. Be sure to remove all weeds, particularly perennial types. Just before planting, rake in general-purpose fertiliser, such as Growmore for an extra boost. Mulch to retain moisture and keep new weeds at bay. Keep an eye on watering during the first season until plants are established.
