Berberis x ottawensis f. purpurea Superba

GardenAward

Barberry

Great vigour and good purple coloured leaves and yellow flowers

Fast growing, this stunning shrub makes a lovely thick hedge or is a good choice for a specimen at the back of a border. Its graceful, arching stems quickly fill a big space. In early summer, the plant is covered in clusters of bright yellow flowers, which are loved by bees and other insects. Deep wine red leaves are a feature from spring through to autumn, when they then turn a glowing red before falling.

Where?

Best given plenty of room to spread in a sunny or partially shaded border, in any soil that's not waterlogged.

How?

Water well until established. Cut back vigorous new stems by two thirds in late summer to keep in shape.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
