Magnify glass

Amelanchier canadensis

Masses of star shaped flowers in spring, purple berries (that the birds love) and brilliant red leaves in the autumn

Clouds of delicate white flowers cover this gorgeous shrub in late spring as the new bronze-tinted leaves appear. Through summer, the leaves are a fresh green and in autumn turn vivid orange and red before falling. An easy to grow plant that will work hard for its living in any garden.

Happiest in partially shade or sun at the back of a border, in any garden soil that doesn't get too dry.

Keep well watered until established. Trim to shape in summer if needed, after the flowers have faded.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
