David Austin Rose Munstead Wood®

GardenAward

Fragrant blooms throughout the Summer and Autumn

Crimson buds open to reveal very rich, deep velvety crimson blooms, with slightly paler outer petals. At first the flowers open as large cups, which with time become more shallowly cupped, to reveal glimpses of the stigma and stamens amongst the petals. It is blessed with a strong Old Rose fragrance, warm and fruity, with hints of blackberry, blueberry and damson. Healthy foliage opens bronze before turning mid-green. Recommended.

Bushy, spreading habit with good disease resistance. Relatively short in stature, it is ideal for planting towards the front of the border.

Munstead Wood was the name of the beautiful home of Gertrude Jekyll, located in Surrey, England, and it was here that she wrote many of her gardening books. Home for most of her life, it was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, whose professional partnership with Jekyll was renowned as one of the most influential of the Arts and Crafts movement.

    Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
